Performance comparison between copper core cables and ordinary aluminum core cables

Advantages of Copper Core Cables

1. Low Resistivity: The resistivity of aluminum core cables is approximately 1.68 times that of copper core cables.

2. Good Ductility: Copper used for electrical applications has a ductility exceeding 30%.

3. High Strength: At room temperature, the allowable stress of copper is 7% to 28% higher than that of aluminum.

4. Fatigue Resistance: Aluminum is prone to fracture under repeated bending, while copper is less prone to fracture. In terms of elastic modulus, copper's elasticity is also approximately 1.7 to 1.8 times higher than that of aluminum.

5. Good Stability: Copper cores are resistant to oxidation and corrosion, while aluminum cores are easily oxidized and corroded.

6. High Current Carrying Capacity: Due to the lower resistivity of copper core cables, the current carrying capacity (i.e., the current that can pass through) of copper core cables with the same cross-section is approximately 30% higher than that of aluminum core cables.

7. Low Energy Consumption: Due to the lower resistivity of copper, copper cables have less energy loss compared to aluminum cables. This is beneficial for improving power generation efficiency and also for environmental protection. 8. Convenient Construction: ① Copper core has good flexibility, allowing for a small bending radius, facilitating turning and conduit installation; ② Copper core has excellent fatigue resistance, able to withstand repeated bending, and is easy to connect; ③ Copper core has high mechanical strength, capable of withstanding large mechanical tensile forces, greatly facilitating construction and laying, and creating favorable conditions for mechanized construction.

2. Advantages of Aluminum Core Cables

1. Low Price: The price of copper rods is more than three times that of aluminum rods, while the amount of copper used is 3.3 times that of aluminum. Therefore, the price of aluminum core cables is much lower than that of copper core cables, making them particularly suitable for projects with limited funds or temporary power applications.

2. Lightweight Cable: The weight of aluminum core cables is only 40% of that of copper core cables, resulting in lower construction and transportation costs.
3. Oxidation Resistance: Aluminum reacts rapidly with oxygen in the air to form an oxide film, effectively preventing further oxidation. Therefore, aluminum conductors are an essential material for high-voltage, large-section, and long-span overhead power transmission.

Although aluminum core cables are relatively inexpensive, copper core cables have significant advantages in power supply, especially in underground power supply. Using copper core cables for underground power supply offers advantages such as low failure rate, corrosion resistance, high reliability, and ease of construction and maintenance. This is precisely why copper core cables are the primary choice for underground power supply in my country.
